Special Vitamin Needs of Seniors
Just because bones, skin, and tissue gets older does not mean that it the body is less in need of the essential vitamins that everybody else required. Age does not always make a difference when it comes to healthy eating habits, but everybody needs to maintain the appropriate levels of vitamins in the body.
Older people may not get the right amount of the essential vitamins for any of a number of reasons, but they do require them as much, ifnot more, than the bodies of their younger counterparts. Proper vitamin levels can even help the body stay young and healthy longer.
When the body ages it becomes less efficient when it comes to the way it utilizes nutrients. Certainmedications that people take may affect the manner in which the body breaks down vital nutrients, and the older people get the more and more medications they may possibly require.
Many seniors eat once or twice a day,and do not bother tomake sure that their meals are nutritionally sound. Combine that wish lack of exercise, and you have high risk of vitamin deficiencies. A great percentage of America’s senior citizen population is considered undernourished because of this.

Fruits and vegetables must be eaten so that Vitamins A, C, and E can get into the body. These vitamins are important antioxidants, and can protect the body from damage from free radicals. Beta carotenes are an important source of antioxidants, yet not many seniors ensure they have enough.
Antioxidants can help decrease the risk of disease that damaged cells can bring, including heart disease, arthritis, certain types of cancer, Parkinsons’ disease and other things. Without antioxidants, the immune system cannot function properly and the signs of aging, including wrinkles and sagging skin, can become more apparent.
Seniors need vitamin K for a variety of things, including making blood clot properly. Alzheimer’s disease is meant to be caused by many things, and one of them is lack of Vitamin K in the system.
Vitamin deficiencies cause a variety of problems, and no matter how old you are it is important to ensure that the body gets the proper amount of vitamins and minerals in the system, just for common sense and a healthy body. If for some reason you are not getting the right amounts of vitamins and minerals in your diet, they even have special formulas that are designed just for older people.
