Chloride

Better known for its partnership, Chloride is the other half of sodium-chloride, or table salt. Although this mineral does not receive much attention, its importance inside the body is nonetheless invaluable.

Chloride is a mineral of the body that is vital to proper function. Although you probably haven’t heard much about chloride, you have probably heard about sodium chloride, even though you may not think so. Sodium chloride is plain old table salt!

Working along with potassium and sodium, chloride is another member of the electrolyte family. This particular electrolyte is found mainly in the body fluids surrounding cells. Its major role is to work with the other electrolyte family members to control the flow of body fluids in the veins as well as throughout the body, and maintain the proper electrolyte balance.

Chloride is an electrolyte, so it works to control the flow of the fluids of the body through the veins, in partnership with other electrolytes. Chloride is found in the fluids around the cells, and it works in conjunction with sodium and potassium. Another great thing about chloride is that it helps to keep the body neutralized. Occasionally, thinks happen that disrupt the natural pH balance in the body; too much acid somehow gets into the body and something has to be done about it soon. Chlorides agents help to neutralize the body, and bring the balance between acid and alkaline back together.

Chloride takes on many forms throughout the body. In the stomach, chloride takes the form of hydrochloric acid, which aids in the digestion process. Hydrochloric acid helps to break down food material so that the small intestines can absorb it. Chlorides also help to rid the liver of waste, as well, so it is a useful cleaning agent in the human body.

One of the great things about chloride is that it is not hard to come by. You can find chloride in sodium chloride, again also known as table salt. It appears in almost everything a person eats in a day. Some food are higher in sodium chloride than others. The amount of sodium chloride in some foods is a great deal higher than in others; processed foods are significantly higher in the amount of sodium chloride because it is necessary to preserve it, and to keep the foods fresh so people will want to eat them for more than a day after they are made.
Now, it is pretty hard to have a deficiency in chloride, but it is possible if health problems or other things are happening that cause the body to lack the chloride it needs. It isn’t too difficult to have a bit too much chloride in the body, however. If you are retaining water, or feeling a little extra bloated it could be because you had a little too much salt in your body. On the off chance that chloride levels do drop too low, a person may feel lethargic, or suffer a drastic\, and extremely dangerous, drop in blood pressure. This drop in blood pressure can even be fatal.
