Multivitamins - To Take Or Not To Take
Although the effects that vitamin and mineral deficiencies can have on the body are extremely deleterious, taking a daily vitamin supplement doesn'tseem to be as simple to everyone as it seems. Many people feel as though vitamin and mineral supplements should be regulated more closely, perhaps even be made available only through a prescription from a doctor, and that vitamin supplements are not a good substitute for good nutritious food.
Let's face it. We are all busy people, and between work, school, kids, family, and social obligations it can be difficult to get in the recommended daily allowance of the vitamins our bodies need the most. Busy lifestyles leave little time for sit-down home-cooked meals; of course the busier a person is the more they tend to eat on the run, which means more McDonald's and Burger King for everyone. While these things may not be bad every once in a while, these foods do not take the place of a healthy meal. Portion sizes are out of control and the ingredients involved in preparing such foods–you probably don't want to hear about them.
Along with restaurant food, the wear and tear that the modern busy lifestyle has on the body is deleterious as well. It's easy to skip a meal, which leads to skipping another meal, and then perhaps eat something in the evening. It seems harmless enough, but that is two meals that were missed; two meals' worth of nutritional value that your body needed and did not get. Sadly, nutrition isn't really important enough to most people for them to quit their jobs–not that anyone would expect them to. However, these extra busy lifestyles contribute to the lack of sleep, fast food, and lack of exercise that contribute to poor health; for these reasons, people choose to supplement their diets with a multivitamin.
If you are having trouble getting the recommended amounts of essential vitamins into your system, taking a multivitamin supplement may be for you. If you think you may already be experiencing health problems due to lack of necessary vitamins, you should certainly consult with your doctor before trying to medicate yourself and make sure that there are no other problems due to the vitamin deficiency. Just be careful not to over-supplement yourself, because that can be an issue as well; although it usually is not toxic, multivitamin over supplementation can have negative effects on your health.
Also, it is important to mention that when you are in doubt, find out. Ask your doctor or health professional about something if you aren't certain, and if you do not need a vitamin supplement, you certainly should not take one. Talk to your doctor about what you are feeling and get their professional advice on the situation. If you slightly over supplement, that's fine, but overdoing it can be worse for your health than vitamin deficiency can be, so moderation is always best.
Multivitamins are available in liquid form, chewable tablets, and pills. Look for a familiar brand name when you go shopping for multivitamin supplements. Although cheaper is usually easier on your pocket book, it's not always easier on your health.
